Lately it seems that the drug policy and the war on drugs have been in the headlines quite a bit. It is becoming evident that the policies of the United States government makes against illegal drugs are unreasonable. Nonetheless, the United States is becoming more apparent to the uses and causes of the miracle plant, “marijuana”. Seeing that marijuana came into America over thirty years ago, the governments forbidding of it has been exposed to relentless debates. Should marijuana be legalized? I stand by the use of marijuana and argue that there are countless medical benefits and that this drug is not more harmful than the legal tobacco or alcohol. This is compared to the sixteen percent of Americans who have tried cocaine, which is obviously a significantly lower percentage. Marijuana is becoming more and more ubiquitous every year despite being less addictive than coffee (Huffington post). The main reason marijuana needs to be legalized in all states is due to its medical use. Marijuana is extremely successful in relieving nausea, which is great for cancer patients suffering from this side effect of chemotherapy. Not only will it help with cancer patients, but this drug is highly used for patients with loss of hunger due to the STD’s, HIV/AIDS. Not to mention that it aids to relax muscle tension, spasms and chronic pain.
