Marijuana legalization has been a big issue recently in the United States. A few states like Colorado already have passed laws legalizing it. In Miami Beach City Council last week, for example passed a city ordinance to fine people in possession of Marijuana if less than twenty grams, instead of an arrest and criminal charges, but, is this the right way to go? Have we considered the health and social outcome that legalizing Marijuana can bring?

Under the Controlled Substance Act, Marijuana is considered a controlled substance and therefore it has legal consequences. This is an accordance with a federal law passed by congress that it applies to all the states within the United States. No state can pass a Marijuana law that is in direct violation of Federal law. The argument would be that the people of a state voted for the legalization of cannabis and the state approved it which is in direct conflict with Federal law. Also, people would rather buy the marijuana from the local drug dealer. If you buy it from the store you will be paying taxes, but it will be legal. One example is illegal moonshine. People in some states still make the moonshine illegally and sell it to avoid the tax laws. All of this is a criminal offense in the US state laws. If marijuana is legal anyone would be able to get a legal purchase of marijuana once, then get the rest from the illegal drug dealer and say it was from the legal store.
