You have probably once asked yourself, seen or heard of this repetitive debate. What is worse alcohol or marijuana? These are often pitted against each other with the goal of determining which would be a healthier choice. There are various themes when it comes to this dialogue like, overdose and mortality rate, the effects on pregnancies, along with side effects on the brain related to memory and learning. There are alcoholics that would tell a stoner that smoking weed is bad for you; marijuana smokers would probably be quick to cite smokers sustain fewer deaths than alcohol consumers. A study found that in order for marijuana to have a fatal effect, approximately 15 to 70 grams of pure THC (the potent chemical in marijuana) must be consumed. To give you an idea of how much this would be, a person would have to smoke approximately 1,500 lbs. of this plant in 15 minutes. In this circumstance it is safe to say marijuana is significantly less deadly than alcohol. Equally important we come along with the effects of these substances on the brain. More than once I have come upon movies and TV series where they portray the “potheads” constantly forgetting and misplacing things. Some of the proven side effects of smoking marijuana or “weed” as it is often referred to, is reduced short-term memory, diminished motor coordination and even altered brain development. Adjacent to this, drinking alcohol heavily weakens the ability of creating new memories. Think of it as if your brain stops recording when you are drunk, this action is referred to as a “blackout”. The majority of heavy drinkers have reported that at least one time in the past year they blacked out, they forgot where they were and or what they did while intoxicated.
