Eating has become one of the most scrutinized aspects of our daily lives. People constantly have something to say about what we eat, and how much we eat. With childhood obesity on the rise many schools are proposing the idea of introducing healthier menus. Now, imagine your school cafeteria is contemplating enforcing this healthier menu. Transferring to the new menu may cost the school system a little more, need additional preparation time in the kitchen, or call for the disposal of some of the student's favorite meals. Regardless, I believe the proposed menu offers more promising long term benefits than disadvantages. For example, the types of foods you eat. The majority of us just eat whatever food our parents or legal guardians provide us with. Unfortunately, it is more typical for parents to purchase unhealthy food. When students come to school this may be one of their only chances to eat a truly healthy meal. However, with the standard cafeteria menu, which was formed for efficiency and cost instead of quality, students do not experience much of a difference, health benefit wise, to what they already expect at home. Allowing for a healthier menu introduces students to a new way of healthy eating that they may not have been accustomed to originally. What we eat can have a profound effect on our daily performance. Eating right can help us concentrate, and focus better, thus improving the quality of our work. Healthier foods will not make you as drowsy as junk food would. In fact, certain foods provide nutrients and proteins that give you a stable source of energy. Students who partake in afterschool sports, or are enrolled in a physical education course, need the energy from the nutrients and protein to help them function at their full capacity.
