#Metoo was the hashtag heard around the world. On social media, users see hashtags for all sorts of events, fads, and pop culture ideas. On the day this hashtag in particular began trending, many did not foresee that the topic would bring women from all around the world together. The year 2017 marked a new beginning for women in their endeavor to stop sexual harassment. Sexual harassment has become a very prominent topic in the year 2017. Sexual harassment is not a controversial topic, this immoral action should be stopped and punished.
In 2017, the #Metoo movement took the world by storm. However, the movement actually began 10 years ago, when Tarana Burke started the #metoo movement to help survivors of sexual assault. “Harassment becomes “inappropriate behavior,” assault becomes “misconduct,” rape becomes “abuse” (Felsenthal 12). While both rape and abuse have negative connotations, the actions associated with rape are far worse than those of abuse. These major life changing events are not taken seriously. A lot of the time, the situation is downplayed because it is not fully understood. “Unfortunately, the term sexual assault has become so little understood that it is sometimes necessary to talk about “touching” or “grabbing” in order to elicit accurate responses” (It’s not groping or fondling- it is sexual assault).
