"Now more than ever in the age of technology, controversies between personal privacy and safety are being debated in America. The National Security Agency uses a program called PRISM that relies on Internet data to look for potential threats to the nation, yet many Americans feel spied upon by the government through their laptops, phones, bank statements, and anything else that leaves a digital trail. However, this monitoring is necessary to keep the nation safe. The federal government alone should have the right and duty to monitor the Internet for suspicious activities to protect the American people. State and local governments should not have the same power as national security has been delegated to the federal government by the United States Constitution.
The Constitution, written in 1787 and ratified in 1788, gives the government the authority to protect the people from violence. Article IV Section 4 states that “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this …show more content…

With the current advances in technology, protection is more important than ever. Terrorists no longer need to be in a certain place to undermine Americans’ feelings of safety. As the recent cyberattacks on Equifax and voting equipment prove, we must meet cyberterrorism with cybersecurity. Many new developments allow this, such as drones and more specified Internet monitoring. NPR employee Eyder Peralta notes that the CIA and the NSA work together on drone attacks on suspected terrorists. He writes that “as the [Washington] Post reports, this revelation may bolster the NSA's assertion that its controversial practice of collecting vast Internet data is used for the purpose of protecting the country” (NPR).
