TToday there is an increasing number of kids becoming obese from lack of physical activity. Over one third of teens and kids are currently obese or overweight. One of the reasons for this occurring is that during the last twenty years technology has morphed our society into one in which parents use games to entertain their children all day. Kids are seldom seen playing outside anymore due to the abundant amounts of electronics. It is recommended that all children have a minimum of sixty minutes of activity a day. Schools today are trying to keep children active to combat obesity. Obesity in children has started dropping, so I believe the schools are headed in the right direction.
After the U. S. government recognized the major problem of obesity in children, the surgeon general recommended 60 minutes or more of physical activity each school day, with aerobic, muscle, and bone-strengthening at least 3 days a week. At the state level, Texas now mandates that all public schools must have physical education in grades K-12 as part of the required curriculum. In addition the state also set up a minimum number of objectives for the physical education curriculum. Students are tested each year on physical fitness. This study showed that 3.8 percent of elementary schools required daily physical education. In a more recent 2012 study from the School Health Policies and Programs Study, elementary schools now show a 93.6 percent of school districts that adopted a policy saying that elementary schools will teach physical education. Other states also are administering and using physical fitness test from elementary through high school.
