The growing epidemic in America: A Research Proposal on Childhood Obesity There is an ever growing problem of obesity plaguing the children of society. The situation is developing and becoming so severe that many researchers believe Baby Bloomers might actually outlive their children. This is due to the many short term and long term effects of obesity that deteriorates the health and psychological wellbeing of an obese child. High cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome are just the few of the many problems that obese children have to deal with. They are experiencing things that they should not have to go through because of parental feeding and they are watching their childhood past by before them. Unfortunately, in society this is not a sole, individual case. Perhaps, the most popular example of an obese child due to parental feeding is the sensationalized reality TV star, Alana Thompson or "Honey Boo Boo" as they call her in the show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The beauty pageant turned reality TV star recently tried to lose weight, after being diagnosed as obese. Currently, she weighs 125 pounds and stands at 4-foot-6. Her body mass index (BMI) is equal to or greater than the 95th percentile, which is calculated by using her height and weight measurements to estimate her body fat. My close watch on the documentary, Our Supersized Kids also demonstrates how parental feeding relates to childhood obesity. The documentary emphasizes the effect of parents starting with their general mentality on the well-being of their child and the way their eating practices affect their child. I will also include Household Routines and Obesity in US Preschool-Aged Children, which demonstrates the influence of household routines and their hold on the child's development of obesity.
