Imagine being a child and going to school for six to seven hours, five days a week without any breaks to go run around and play to burn off all the energy stored inside? Today’s schools are under so much pressure to have their students perform at their best and as a result many schools are eliminating gym class and recess to make more room for other studies, and the children are paying the consequences; a major one being becoming obese or overweight because of the lack of exercise. “According to ABC News, the percentage of children ages 6 to 11 who are obese has increased from 7 percent in 1980 to 18 percent in 2010” (Neporent). The first solution is the No Child Left Behind Act. “The major focus of No Child Left Behind is to close student achievement gaps by providing all children with a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education” (“No Child Left Behind Act”). The No Child Left Behind Act was passed to give every child an equal playing field when it comes to their schooling no matter their race or class. Bonnie Rochman wrote an article stating that, “Too many kids weigh too much, but too few states and schools require recess or follow recommended guidelines for physical education” (Rochman). A survey was conducted in every state, except a few, where they found that most schools were in the weak category. This is the case because schools aren’t enforcing gym class and recess (Rochman). The increasing pressure from the No Child Left Behind act to do well on all standardized tests is cutting into gym time and recess because schools and administrators don’t want to get penalized or have budget cuts for their children’s low test
