Education in America: No Controversy Left Behind
Introduction
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a program that was implemented to help shorten the achievement gap in education but has been causing issues in the education system since it was implemented back in 2002. Any education reform is best understood by going back to the beginning to understand where it developed from and at what level. Since NCLB’s implementation, there have been many negative issues pertaining to it but there are some alternate ways that they can be addressed and handled. NCLB is also continuing to grow and change depending on the schools needs in the United States, which comes with its own backlash. While there were many education discussions based around the child labor laws creating an age restriction so that children would be allowed to go to school, it lead to the next step to getting federal involvement into the education field. The first time that there was major public attention drawn toward educational achievement in schools and led to action being taken was with President Lyndon B. Johnson and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. President George W. Bush then reauthorized this act in 2002 renaming it No Child Left Behind. These reauthorizations led to disadvantaged groups gaining a sense of priority. Acts such as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 dropped the immigration quota system. This led to The Bilingual Education Act proposed in 1968 that reauthorized the ESEA to helps kids with low English proficiency. The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 helped the kids with mental and physical disabilities by mainstreaming them into classrooms rather than specific special education programs.
