Common Core was first introduced in 2011, the standards were designed to build upon the most advanced thinking about preparing all students for success in college, career, and life. The advantage to adopting Common Core is all states will have a method of comparing themselves. This resulted in every state advancing their standards to the next level. Some states that accepted common core had to move backwards. The ultimate goal for Common Core is to have every school district follow the same national standards. Common Core is believed to be backed by the government. Either they accept the program or receive no funding to help the school.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was the previous reauthorization of the elementary and secondary education act of 1965. The law greatly increased the federal government’s role in education, especially in terms of holding schools accountable for the academic performance of their students. After NCLB passed, however, it remained in place nearly fourteen years until it was finally replaced by the Every Student Succeeds Act in December of 2015. The idea of the no child left behind act is that every child can learn, we expect every child to learn, and the teachers to show us whether or not every child is learning. The worst part of the failed No Child Left Behind program is that the teachers teach the test. The students are memorizing the material instead of learning about the information. The teachers teaching the test will not help learn anything, and it definitely will not help them when students go to college. In college students have to be able to study by themselves and memorize all the notes they wrote for at least two weeks. Students will not receive a study guide to study if they do it will not be like the one they received in high school. When I was in school, we never had to study because the test was taught to use or we had a study guide that looked exactly like the test was going to look. How can we expect our children to go to college and be on an equal footing with other children that are coming from all parts of the world. Common core helps increase one’s brain capacity makes one have to THINK about how a problem is solved. It helps one to become more articulate in speech and in writing. Something that is carried on pass a student’s educational days. If one can explain the concept in solving a problem, then you will know if someone has given you the correct information or not. “I agree with common core because, it allows the student to learn to think for themselves, in steps that would allow them to work any problem with the same concept. It gives them the experience of thinking outside the box, because everything is not always black and white. Everything in life will not always be given straight to you. Sometimes you will have to figure things out for yourself. If you have not been taught to think for yourself or of alternative solutions, you will forever be standing in the one spot, waiting for someone else to come and help you,” says Len Stevenson a 7th grade math
