The Latino culture has very strong ideas of the masculine and feminine image and what is accepted from each gender identity. The Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Queer (LGBTQ) Latinidad community as a result often do not fit into the roles their society expected them to fill. Due to the conflict in beliefs between the sexual orientation and ethnic background of a Latinidad LGBTQ member, they can face various difficulties that lead into mistreatment from themselves and the surrounding world. They often experience: a lack of acceptance in society, hash treatment, depression, self-hate, and resentment from their own religion.
The LGBTQIA community is now fighting for its rights, just as women, minorities, and others did before. Throughout history, homosexuality has been stigmatized as a criminal, sinful, and
In 2007 In an anonymous survey of 8,000 New Zealand secondary school students conducted by the University of Auckland, 0.9% of those surveyed reported exclusive attraction to the same sex, 3.3% to both sexes and 1.8% to neither. It is also unfair to assume that a child who belongs to a homosexual couple will inherit homosexual tendencies, although the child will be more exposed to things relating to the LGBTQI community, this does not mean the child will be homosexual themselves. The promotion of positive sexualities will be great for the whole school environment because that might mean that other young kids curious as to who they’re attracted to can feel safe and not afraid of being outcasted and hated It’s very important to make sure that everyone feels safe and happy with how they identify and if the teachers show that they think it’s fine
Homophobia Throughout History and the Effects It Has Had on the LGBTQ+ Community Ever since written records have been around, homosexuality has been documented throughout history. Gradually, the changes of homosexuality tended to fluctuate within several different cultures, causing some points of the past to be more progressive than others (cite this). Homophobia has not always been present, but once it began to be associated with disgusting animals such as hyenas who were thought to eat corpses and involve themselves with homosexual acts, people began to relate homosexuality to something distasteful (source 12 cite this). Two church fathers, Augustine who was known promoter of forced conversion therapy and Clement who believed homosexuality
The overall experience of the LGBTQ community in America has been a horrific experience for the past 300 plus years. Individuals who share same sex interest were oppressed, discriminated, brutalized, experimented on, and killed due to their alternative lifestyle(s). Elze (2006) confirms these allegations by mentioning... “Since colonial times… people who love and sexually desire those of the same sex, have been imprisoned, executed, witch hunted, pilloried, confined in asylums, fired, excommunicated, disinherited, evicted, extorted, entrapped, censored, declared mentally ill, drugged, and subjected to castration, hormone injections, clitoridectomy, hysterectomy, ovariectomy, lobotomy, psychanalysis, and aversive therapies” (p.43).
Tyler Oakley once said, in his book Binge,“This is why homophobia is a terrible evil: it disguises itself as concern while it is inherently hate.” This is one of the most important topics the world is facing: Homophobia. Homophobia is the fear & hating of people in the LGBTQ+ community. People in this community face discrimination from all around them. However, I believe this shouldn’t be the case.
The media largely does not represent the LGBTQ+ community through mass media, and even more concerning, the media will often misrepresent the community. With misrepresentation, a stigma grows towards the community, spreads false information, or even negatively portrays the LGBTQ+ community. For example “A new study published in LGBTQ Health found that frequent exposure to negative depictions of transgender people in the media was significantly associated with clinical symptoms of depression, anxiety, global psychological distress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this population (Feenway)”. Damaging information or misrepresentation can be detrimental to the mental health of the community. In the 1980s, when a new sexually transmitted disease was on the rise (AIDS), people began to start to blame the LGBTQ+ community, and the disease was largely labeled as a “gay disease.”
In most countries worldwide, gay marriage is illegal, forcing homosexuals to remain hidden out of a sense of shame and fear. Many religions, including Judaism and Islam, forbid homosexual acts and behaviour. This is worrying for society as one may not be accepted by one’s own religion, as well as being rejected by society. Furthermore, homosexuality is constantly slated over social media, providing a negative aura surrounding the subject. All these factors influence the fear and shame of an individual.
I have never been to an AA meeting before, and I had a completely different imagination of how a meeting takes place. I thought the meeting was held in a depressing state, dark, and everyone is sad/drunk. However, my experience was exactly the opposite of what I imagined. Even though this was the first AA meeting that I have attended, I feel like I have been attending AA all my life. The members are friendly, supportive, and not shy to express their proudness of being part of AA.
Heteronormativity is a system of privilege that people enforce the beliefs what is “normal” in our daily life. Gender and sexuality is a big part of the system of Heteronormativity. We had established very strict expectations on each sex. For instance, the boys are dressed in blue, like toy cars and are expected to be aggressive while the girls are dressed in pink, like toy dolls and are expected to be sweet and gentle. When the child chose not to follow the expectations of each gender roles, the child is highly likely to be bullied by their peers, but they could be pressured by their parents or the society to conform the expected gender.
The topic I choose is LGBTQ and I will mainly write about their class and sexuality. The Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender are experience too much discrimination in the past and government should set and change some law for them. LGBTQ is stand by Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Q can mean either “questioning or queer. Lesbian means the woman who is romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to women and the gay means similar as lesbian, just switch female to male. Bisexual is the woman/man who is romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to people of both sexes.
We sometimes find ourself contemplating about who we are and what do we want in our life. As a gay man I have found myself stuck in many places, this is totally normal. We all try to find that perfect life but sometimes it involves barriers. Being wrong and owning up to what you want in life makes the ride easier. Thus being said, I would like to introduce myself with memories that shaped who I am and the struggles that I’ve achieved.
Substitute the word “gay” in any of those cases, and the terms suddenly become far less loaded, so that the ring of disapproval and judgment evaporates. Some gay rights advocates have declared the term off limits. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance against slander, or Glad, has put “homosexual” on its list of offensive terms and in 2006 persuaded The Associated Press, whose stylebook is the widely used by many news organizations, to restrict use of the word. Miss Suhashini a, lecturer of Phycology Department at UTAR who was currently doing research about LGBT has looked at the way the term is used by those who try to portray gays and lesbians as deviant. What is most telling about substituting it for gay or lesbian are the images that homosexual tends to activate in the brain, she said.
Homosexuality was once considered sacred in ancient Rome, albeit being treated poorly since the middle ages. Like this, homosexuality has been suppressed for a long time and thenceforth, the public opinion towards it has been on a downward road until recent years when LGBT groups started stepping up front and coming out along with the increasing controversy towards their rights. The subject of homosexuality has always been polemical. Every once in a while a news article would come up saying something like "Manny Pacquiao provokes storm by calling gay people ‘worse than animals’" or "Sam Smith Talks Coming Out As Gay".
The issue of "homosexuality" seems to have divided the nation. While the matter is still under sub-judice, the debate over the draconian Section 377 continues in the public sphere. It is now no longer is a legal battle as the debate almost settled legally, but the moral argument continues. Ofcourse it is a vague topic as many advocate for it and a lot of people oppose. The fundamental question is whether anyone cares about the moral argument?
