Over the years, the needs of “shark fin soup” has been so great that a big portion of the sharks are critically endangered. Every year humans slaughter over 100 millions of sharks and yet we think they’re the blood-thirsty killers. After all of these deaths, why do we keep on capturing sharks? Well, sharks are used in cosmetics, skin care products and in medicines. But the main issue that causes their populations to dramatically drop is because some of us would like to make an absolutely tasteless and expensive soup to impress others.
The brutal business of finning occurs worldwide and it happens most commonly in high seas fisheries (hundreds of miles out of sea). Shark’s low reproductive ability makes it very difficult for them to recover from overfishing. As humans whether we’re catholic or non catholic, we should all stop animal cruelty from happening and stand up against “finning”. “Shark fin soup”- for what? Like Jesus always taught us,” treat others the way you want to be treated.” In the parable “ the good samaritan (Luke 10:29-37)”, Jesus gave us the lesson to help each other and be merciful just like what the Samaritan did.
