The controversy surrounding the water supply from Shoal Lake has been around for around 100 years. As the city of Winnipeg was growing at an enormous rate Winnipeg needed a way to get accesses to more clean water and in a short amount of time. They decided to get their water from Shoal Lake about an hour away from Winnipeg. By building the structures for the lake the city of Winnipeg were able to support its growing population, but unfortunately isolated a community.
Due to the isolation in this community the people living there has faced many challenged such as expensive drinking water from Ontario, nowhere to place garbage, no schools, limited access to emergency services, less access to services/stores and an unsafe environment with multiple people drowning in an attempt to get home. The latest push to help improve the lives of these community members is to build a bridge so they can have access to leave their island more frequently. The people currently living there never had their current homes or community interfered with (as far as I know) and are choosing to live there despite knowing how dangerous it can be. When asked why they do not move away they replied with something along the lines of “this is our home” although I do understand the sentimental response of wanting to live where your ancestries lived, it is at the end of the day their chose to do so. Despite Manitoba being the only placed I lived and all my family being here I would move if another place could offer me a better place especially if the current place I was living in had limited access to more resources. As well the citizens there are free to move, people from that community have in the past moved in order to get an education, but some chose to move
