"Trump, Tweeting and Social Media
Ever since our nation's infancy two hundred and forty-two years ago, we the people of the United States have cherished, coveted, fought for and died for our First Amendment rights. I believe that there should be a line drawn between freedom of speech and the safety of others. The question is, where should that line be drawn. In answering this question, the age, status, and title of those involved should be the guiding principle and deciding factor. As a student, free speech via social media platforms is very important to me and to my fellow students. It allows us to express our feelings on religion, politics, family and community issues. Many of whom use social media platforms as a way to get their ideas out to the common person. The question now, is should there be regulations on President Trump's Twitter postings? Consider this situation. In 1917, Charles Schenck was taken to court for publishing Anti-Draft propaganda. It was seen as an act of espionage. The Supreme Court decided that any speech that creates a “clear and present danger†is unconstitutional. It could be argued that calling Kim Jong Un a “little rocket man†could be placing the United States on a path of retaliation, but, for the present moment, no actions have been taken from North Korea that would create a clear and present danger to his family, community, nation, or foreign allies. If there is any concern about the Presidents use, or misuse, of social media, keep in mind that elections have consequences. The American people chose Donald Trump as our president. If what he says is so offensive, he can be removed in three years. But, for now, we Americans must sit tight and trust that our president will say the right things, both on and off of social media. Furthermore, if the President is to be monitored without such claims of clear and present danger being made, then it would be fair and judicial to monitor other politicians who utilize social
