Surrogacy is the reason I am here today. When my mom was 18 and a freshman in college, she was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumor; a very aggressive and fast growing tumor. After years of chemo and months of radiation, she was told she was cancer free but would be lucky to live ten years. Today, she has been going 32 years strong. During this whole process, she was told she likely wouldn’t be able to have kids of her own. Once her and my father decided they wanted to start a family, she figured a surrogate host would be her best option, and then her best friend volunteered to do it. It was definitely a long, and very thought out, process that took many trials and failures, but she knew this was medically the only way she could have kids of her own. Many people oppose surrogacy because of religious beliefs or for the fact it is like creating a human market. Some of these requirements include previously having children, being of good health, having a supportive family, and going to counseling. These are all important factors because your body is being used to carry and deliver someone else’s child, and you want that child to be healthy for that family. Being a surrogate is one of the most rewarding experiences, especially if done for the right reasons. There is such a positive outcome when someone is a host out of love; they shouldn’t be in it just for the money. My host offered to be one for my mom and did not want to be paid. All she wanted was for my mom to be happy and have a family. Even the attorney my host had to have didn’t want to be paid. The kind hearts of these very important people are why I am here and alive today. Many more children could be here, because of the kind hearts of surrogate hosts if all states legalized
