Since the Syrian civil war broke out, there have been mass numbers of citizens fleeing the country and seeking refuge in other countries, the United States being among these countries. Syrians must go through a very specific process in order to be allowed refugee status in the U.S. Despite the fact that the federal government has declared that United States will accept a certain number of refugees, many states insist that they will not accept any refugees. This is typically due to a fear of Isis sympathizers and terrorism. The United States must choose between following in one of their most iconic traditions in accepting refugees, or turning them away in their greatest time of need. Within the last three years, there has been a major influx of Syrian refugees into the United States. Which means there are 36 states not allowing refugees entry. “California has accepted the most Syrian refugees (252), followed by Texas (242) and Michigan (207)” Most States do not want Syrian refugees due to fear that they, may be in some way, connected to Isis - a worldwide tourist group. However, even though that is the main reason people will look at for why these states are denying entry there are other factors. “Resettlement locations are determined based on a number of factors, including family ties, the size of the local immigrant community and the ability of local resettlement agencies to accommodate new cases.
