Imagine living in a country where its been taken over by a terrorist group and the government is also attacking the citizens. Your sense of security has now vanished, and staying in your home country will give you less of a chance of survival than it is sailing the Mediterranean Sea. It is clear the winning choice is to leave your country and flee to another. The trip proved to be harsh, but you made it. When you arrive, you stay in a camp that is run down and sanitation is lacking, along with basic necessities. After you apply for asylum in a country, they tell you it may take a while for it to be accepted, and then you realize that the camp will become your new home for a while. As stated by CNN, The United States has given the largest share of aid to the Syrian refugee crisis, more than $574 million, or 31% of total aid donated. The US has let 1,500 Syrian refugees settle in the United States, and by the end of this year President Obama stated that they will be letting in 10,000 more. Obama and Iain Levine are for refugees coming in and seeking safety. Also, Obama stated that not letting in the refugees isn’t an “American thing to do.” Based on whitehouse.org, the United Stated has been providing refugees with basic necessities. These necessities are healthcare, food, water, and this goes to “people suffering in all 14 Governors of Syria and to Syrian refugees in neighboring countries” (whitehouse.org). Furthermore, the government assists about 6.6 million Syrians per month with this assistance. “The US is still the biggest single donor of humanitarian assistance to the Syrians. But it has not taken in many refugees since the civil war started in March 2011.” (Christopher Woolf). Turkey has been a great deal of assistance in supporting the refugees. “It now shelters almost half of the Syrian refugees”, 1.9 million, (cnn.com.). There are a vast amount of other countries helping aid them. For example, Iraq holds 249,000 refugees, but just like Syria, “Iraq has been torn by attacks launched by ISIS” (CNN.com). According to CNN, combining Jordan, Egypt and Iraq they all shelter 1,010,000 refugees. Refugees apply for asylum in countries, and its definition is when a person fears persecution based on race, religion, and political opinion. In addition, countries like Russia, Sweden, France, United Kingdom, Denmark and Hungary have millions applying for asylum, and they have taken requests to let some in the next few years.
