Imagine if you had nowhere to live because your house blew up. Imagine you have no clean water or good clothes. Imagine you lost one of your parents or family members. This is what many children in Syria and around the world have to deal with everyday due to war. What is a refugee? A refugee is someone who has fled their country because of war. Refugees can be all ages. There are over 1 million refugees coming into different countries. Many refugees are coming from Syria and other countries in the Middle East. These refugees are going to countries in Europe and the USA. They are coming with little or nothing with them other than some clothes. Over 2,000 people died because they drowned trying to get to Europe. Around half the Syrian population has fled because of war. Refugees face many challenges daily. First, refugees do not have a good education because it wasn’t safe to go to school. Even if they could go to school, they do not have any money to buy school supplies. Many people are helping in different ways. Teachers are being trained to help the refugee students with their education. Some great organizations like Save The Children have volunteered and helped to let kids go to school again. Kids are overjoyed and grateful now. Since the kids haven’t been to school for so long, when they start to go again they are placed in grades where they were before. In California, a small coffee shop employed refugees and helped them get a job. You can write a letter to a refugee to let them know they are not alone and that you can help them. You can donate clothes to the refugees who don’t have any. NGO’s like the American Red Cross are helping. A refugee camp is somewhere refugees stay at. They provide food, shelter, and water.
