Adults and teenagers are risking their lives to send text messages, check out the latest Snapchat filter, open Instagram DMS, scroll through their Twitter feed, and check their number of friends on Facebook. Every day, 660,000 drivers use their phones while driving. Not only are they putting themselves and their passengers in danger, but also the other helpless drivers on the road. On September 1, 2017, Texas made it against the law to text while driving. 46 other states also follow this ban, so why are car crashes due to texting while driving still so prevalent? Reggie Shaw, who killed two people while texting and driving, now says that he, “hasn’t gotten a phone call or text message that was so important that it couldn’t wait until he stopped the car.” Everyone knows that lives are at risk when texting and driving, but do people know that the risk is still there while texting and walking? Distracted walking has been added to the National Safety Council’s report of unintentional deaths and injuries. Children are obviously not as responsible as adults; however, they are given cell phones which come with huge responsibilities. Most parents give their children a phone because they want to be able to easily contact them and keep up with their whereabouts. Unfortunately, children are being taught the ways of cell phone addiction early on and in some cases, this has resulted in terrible tragedies.
