Drivers who use a cell phone while driving are four times more likely to get severely injured in a car accident. Data shows the risk to the public is real and serious. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) any given moment during the daylight hours, over 800,000 vehicles in the U.S. are being driven by someone calling, browsing or texting on their phone. Each year cell phone usage while driving is estimated to cause 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 major injuries, 2,600 deaths, and $43 billion in total damages. I want to make a proposal that we should eliminate cellphone usage while driving. Using a cellphone behind the wheel of a motor vehicle not only puts you and those around you in danger. States and local jurisdictions should continue to prohibit cellphone usage while driving. Some of the states that prohibit cell phone usage while driving are California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. All of these states allow what is known as "primary enforcement of an offense." They are worried that prohibiting cellphone usage would prevent drivers from responding to family emergencies. Those against the law also think cellphone use while driving cannot be stopped and they think people should be free to make their own decisions. They think the majority of drivers are responsible with their phone use, and argue that there are other distractions besides using your cellphone while driving. Some examples are eating in your car, or changing the radio station. Personally, I disagree with this because if they have an emergency phone call they can always pull over to a safe spot to respond.
