Vehicular crimes are committed everyday. Police are trying to get the upper had on it by coming up with ways to stop it and slow it down. First, vehicular crimes are serious offenses and should have more sever consequences. Second, you can get a DUI for more then just drinking and driving. Not many people know this but you can get charged with a DUI for being under the influence of drugs, just like alcohol. But unlike alcohol there is no sobriety test for drugs. The only way to tell if you are under the influence of a drug is by taking a blood simple. The legal limit for marijuana vary per state the highest allowed is .5mg but most states have a zero tolerance policy limit (“Drug-Impaired”). In 2009 a study found that 18% of driver killed in an accident have tested positive for drugs. 11.4% of fatal crashes in 2010 involved a drugged driver. Marijuana is the most popular drug of choice for drugged driving. National Roadside Survey in 2013-2014 shows that 12.6 driver tested positive for Marijuana on the weekend nights. Also behind marijuana other drugs people are driving on are alprazolam (Xanax) 12.1 percent, hydrocodone (Vicodin) 11.1 percent, oxycodone (OxyContin) 10.2 percent, and diazepam (Valium) 8.4 percent (“DrugFacts”). In 2009 6,761 people died from drugged driving, and 440,000 People were injured in car crashes from it. Young kids are mainly at risk when it comes to drugs and driving, 28% of high school seniors have admitted to being under the influence of an illegal drug while driving or being in the same car with someone who has been. 31% of college students have driven after using marijuana. 45% have gotten a ride with someone who has used. It started all the way back in 1954 when they first came up with a device to read your blood alcohol level (Loewit, et al 63). Sobriety check points are a ways for police to evaluate the driver and to see if they have been drinking using drugs. Check points are usually publicized before hand, and have signs posted in the location of where it will be held. The way there set up is usually by sequence, so every 3 or 4 cars will be pulled aside for a sobriety check if needed. They do it like this so know one can say they were pulled aside because it was racial profiling thing. It usually doesn't take longer then a whole light cycle to go through a check point as long as everything checks out alright. The goal of a check point is to take the drunk/drugged drivers of the roads and to keep them and everyone else safe (“Sobriety”). The legal limit for driving is .08 if you are over 21 and if you are under 21 its is .00 there is a no toleration limit against under age drinking. Some say after three drinks and your alright to drive, thats not always true. It goes by your weight on how the alcohol effects you. If your 120 pounds you'll have a two drink limit before your over. If your 160 pounds you'll be alright with 3 but no more then that and your limit goes up the heavier you are.
