The electoral college is a method by which the President of the United States is elected. The college consists of electors divided by state where each state has a number of electors equal to their number of Representatives and Senators. Every four years for the presidential election, in December, the members of the electoral college each cast a vote for two different candidates. These electors choose who they vote for based on the popular vote in their state. Essentially, they are supposed to represent the voters in their state by voting for whomever won that state's popular vote. However, there has been much controversy over the electoral college, especially in the last few years, due to people’s belief that it unfairly weights some voters over others and the “loaded gun” phenomenon. Instead of equalizing the importance of different voters and their issues, removing the electoral college would overly emphasize the urban vote. Candidates would spend all there time in urban cities where they can easily access lots of voters. Also, since the media, businesses, and population density are all prolific in urban areas, candidates would focus their campaigns into these areas to reach the most voters in the shortest amount of time thereby ignoring smaller, rural areas. The electoral college is also formed in a way where it is impossible to win the presidential election without support from multiple regions. So, candidates like Mitt Romney, whose main appeal was in the South, are not able to win the election without help from other regions of the country. Ultimately, the electoral college makes the presidential elections more fair by making sure that the winner of the presidential election represents the views of as many Americans as
