Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have to be a child and fight to the death? Well, Suzanne Collins wrote a book called the Hunger Games, where that exact thing happens. The Hunger Games is a fictional story taking place in Panam where the government has full control. The government forces 24 kids to compete in a nationally televised event called The Hunger Games, where they have to kill each other and survive in the wilderness. Katniss, the main character, volunteers to be a part of the games in order to protect her sister. Throughout the book, we see Katniss try to survive the games. Katniss thinks about the fact that she feels like she owes Peeta for something. When she is with Peeta facing the city of Panem, she thinks about the fact that they have to kill each other. “Oh, well, I think. There will be twenty-four of us. Odds are someone else will kill him before I do.” (Pg. 33) She doesn't want to kill Peeta, or anyone. Since the tributes are forced to kill one another year after year, it starts to become accepted and normalized. Another example is the people of Panem are forced to watch the bloodbath of the Hunger Games. Once the games ended they hosted a victor's ceremony. It was live broadcast and required for all of Panem to watch. Caesar Flickerman hosted the ceremony. They show a highlight reel, a three hour recap of the entire Hunger Games. The highlight reel shows off all the killings of the other tributes. “This will last exactly three hours and it’s required viewing for all of Panem.”(pg. 362) The government makes the victor's ceremony a requirement to be watched yearly. The people of Panem get used to this and celebrate the hunger games. They view it as entertainment rather than
