The value of human life is essential. However, sometimes it is not treated in this way. There are many examples of this all around us, which doesn’t exclude the Hunger Games by Suzanne collins. The hunger games is a story following Katniss Everdeen, a teen girl from Panem. Each year the country of Panem hosts the Hunger Games where they choose two tributes from each district 1-12 to fight to the death. Katniss’s sister, Primrose is chosen but Katniss volunteers as a tribute to save her. Her fellow tribute is Peeta Mellark. Before the tributes enter the arena they all have individual interviews, during Peeta’s he confesses his love for Katniss. This gives Katniss lots to think about going into the games. When she finds him he is camouflaged and badly wounded, she makes a shelter and they start living in it together. As this unfolds their romance grows. Eventually, it is just Katniss and Peeta left and it is announced that there can only be one winner again. Katniss comes up with a plan, threatening both her and Peeta to die, leaving them with no living victor. Just as they are about to carry out the plan it is announced that they both win. Life outside the games gets a little confusing, Katniss isn’t sure of her feeling for Peeta, and the Capitol isn’t happy with them threatening to leave them without a victor. They feel as though she is trying to rebel. In the novel the Hunger games there are examples of valuing and not valuing human life, an example of valuing human life is when Katniss volunteers as tribute to save her sister Prim. When this occurs it is during the reaping. Katniss has her name in the reaping so many times so that her family can get extra food that she doesn’t even worry about Prim getting chosen with her one entry. Until Prim does get chosen. Katniss is frozen, not knowing what to do until she jumps out saying that she volunteers as tribute to save her sister. “For a moment, I yearn for something … the idea of leaving the district … making our way in the woods … but I know I was right about not running off. Because who else would have volunteered for Prim?” (pg. 25) This proves that Katniss is valuing Prim’s life because she knows Prim would not have survived if she went into the games so she knew someone had to go for her. Overall I think this shows that Katniss values Prim and her life and was willing to die so that Prim wouldn’t have
