In 1995, William Savage of Hernando, MS, was shot twice, at point blank range by 2 individuals who went on a rampage after watching the movie, Natural Born Killers. His granddaughter, Amanda, was my best friend throughout middle and high school, and still is a dear friend today. The horror story was covered nationally since the 2 individuals left Hernando and continued down to Louisiana where attempted to kill Patsy Byers. William Savage was a beloved figure not only to his family but to the Hernando community. Patsy was a convenience store cashier and was rendered a quadriplegic. The two perpetrators were Sarah Edmondson, 19 and her boyfriend Benjamin James Darras, 18 years old. The couple had watched the violent film, many times and decided to make it happen in real life. While most rated R films, 18 and 19 year olds can watch, I believe those should be raised to at least 21 years of age. I do understand that raising the age may make it harder for teens to have access to the movies, if they are going to watch a violent film, nothing is going to stop them. With the access of media right at the tip of your fingers, teens can get into any site, pretend to be of any age, and view the violent film. However, I do believe that there should not even be commercials promoting films, TV shows or any other avenue that displays violence. I know that during the day, there are commercials for The Walking Dead, 24 Legacy and many others, that my children see, because they are at home during the day. When they access Netflix to watch their favorite cartoon shows, there are advertisements for Orange is the New Black right there for them to see. They can click it with a press of a button. This type of access should be restricted for all children under the age of
