It is very controversial topic when drug testing is discussed. In fact, it becomes controversial when it is said that it should be a requirement to have applicants be drug tested to receive welfare benefits. A national welfare system was born in America in 1935. Public welfare was developed to help needy families with programs that provide cash assistance or services to individuals and families who are eligible basis of their income and assets. Therefore, anyone applying for welfare assistance should require a drug test and only allowed to receive benefits for a monitored period, this will discourage long-term dependence on welfare use, identify individuals in need of substance treatment and it is a normal part of life.
First, individuals should be drug tested and limited on how long they receive benefits for, this will discourage long term dependence on welfare use. Adding more requirements for applying or keeping benefits will encourage individuals who are unemployed to search for work. Knowing that benefits will end after a certain time will motivate them to find work. Finding means of income is crucial for living. This will teach the individual how to be self-sufficient. However, some individuals do carry jobs and still struggle to provide some necessities. These individuals should be allowed to receive benefits as long as proof of work is shown but as well will be cut off after a time framed. Welfare should not be used to save the individuals out of situations but to provide a cushion while the individuals figures things out.
