When someone says the words “Death Penalty” around me I don’t cringe. But I do think of the electric chair, needles, broken hearts, suicide and fear. The death penalty is a crime deterrent, it helps with overpopulation and gets rid of someone who could be a threat to this world. I believe the death penalty would make this world a better place if it was more acceptable in more states. In my essay I want to show you the positives in the death penalty and steer you away from so many of the negatives. The punishment of death is an effective way to make it aware that a serious crime will have a consequence. Over the past six years studies have shown that the death penalty has discouraged many from doing a horrible crime. The death penalty is basically a threat to many people.
According to Paul Van Slambrouck, " Assaults in prisons all over US, both against fellow inmates and against staff, have more than doubled in the past few decade, according to research gathered by the Criminal Justice Institute in Middletown, Connecticut" (Christian Science Monitor, Internet). Sending serious criminals to prisons is getting more and more dangerous for other inmates and for those who work among the inmates. A former governor of New York, George E. Pataki, said that bringing back the death penalty to New York lowered the serious crime rate.
Analyst counted that between 3 in 18 lives would be saved if each convicted killer was executed with the death penalty. They redid this study in 2006 and found that just one execution results in a total of five fewer homicides and that if the death sentence is commuted, it means even five more homicides. My grandma is the 911 dispatcher for O'Brien County and has been doing this for 52 years and knows lots about inmates. She explained to me that at one point some prisons had more inmates than they did beds. Overpopulation has burnt holes in many people's wallets. All taxpayers pay for most of the needs of prisoners which to me is stupid.
According to Portland State University, “High prison population has a direct, negative effect on the psychological state of inmates. Overcrowding has been known to cause far more stressful situations and has prompted prison officials to react inappropriately on occasion due to being forced to accommodate ill-advised numbers of prisoners.” It’s not very fair to the prisoners that are locked up for drug possession to be possible cell mates with a man who murdered a family just for fun.
Another big factor we must look at is our religion. Many religions believe the death penalty is going against the word of God. I am Lutheran and we believe that the death penalty is a good thing. Religion really makes people think about where they stand on certain topics. I think that just because your religion believes one thing doesn’t mean you need too.
