America has utilized the death penalty as far back as the 18th century, but little did people know the penalty harms the country more than it benefits it. Back then the government would hang people, but now they have them wait a long period of time on death row until the government chemically exterminate them. The government should disband the death penalty in order to save thousands of dollars in court fees and housing costs and to stop the racial discrimination of blacks. By abolishing the death penalty the government and taxpayers will save thousands of dollars from fees for the court and housing of criminals on death row. For example, a Seattle university study examining the costs of the death penalty found that “each death penalty …show more content…
The government could then spend this money on other things like education. This will benefit our economy and help us pay off debt far more than killing people will. Additionally, according to a new study by Kansas Judicial Council, “defending a death penalty case costs about four times as much as defending a case where the death penalty is not sought” (J. Sullivan, et al.). The money tax payers pay not only goes to housing the criminals on death row but also goes to the lawyers that defend them. The government pays lawyers defending death row criminals quadruple the amount they pay other lawyers defending life in prison cases. The government takes out four times the amount of money then they would need to if they abolished the death penalty from taxpayers. As the government allows the death penalty for years to come, they will hurt themselves with all the money they will lose. Furthermore, a legislative audit in Kansas found that “the estimated cost of the death penalty case was 70 percent more than the cost of a comparable non-death penalty case” (“Death Penalty Cost”). If a case costs 500,000 dollars without the death penalty it would cost 850,000
