Would you become a teacher based on the diminutive salary and benefits that teachers currently receive? In Oklahoma, the average teacher makes $44,128 annually according to “Oklahoma Watch”. Based on the important role they hold in society and the intrinsic value of teachers, their restitutions should be higher. I believe teachers should be paid more because they are the building blocks of society, being a teacher is time consuming, and the retention of teachers is low due to the pay. A teacher is somebody who instructs, mentors, and guides the future of our society each and every day. Everyone requires the superb skill of teachers, to help realize their potential in life. “They teach students how to be good adults by teaching them to persevere when things do not go as planned. When a student gets a bad grade on a test, they may realize what they did not do well on and do better on the next test. They teach students what is right or wrong by teaching students not to cheat on tests, assignments, or quizzes, as cheating devalues the learning process” (Snyder). This can possibly take away from the learning of their students because of the lack of concentration towards this specific job. Having more than one job isn’t the only obstacle that teachers face, being a teacher requires them to work many hours outside of normal classroom hours.
