When reading Chapter 5 “Craig Seganti on Taking charge in the classroom”, the overall chapter was interesting when it comes to managing a classroom. As a teacher, we want to be able to control the structure of a classroom, but at times is unable to accomplish the task due to our student’s behaviors. At the beginning of the chapter it states a productive classroom may have difficulties but it is the way a teacher present themselves along with the rules of the classroom determines the outcome of the student’s actions. My personal classroom management philosophy is to provide an equal, optimistic, learning environment. I believe the environment should be friendly, and students are all equals with the ability to actively listen to the teacher. The environment should be controlled and disciplined, but not authoritarian . Students are innately curious, disruptive and talkative. Rules will be set in place, however this is a learning environment so we will constantly work on appropriate behavior.

I believe that my classroom management style is clear and concise, and invites all students to participate. By collaborating with my students, we will come up with rules and consequences of breaking them that holds the children responsible for their own actions. I plan on getting to know the students through class discussions and interactive activities too. I will also reach out to guardians of these children, and set up a meeting in the beginning of the year. Career Analysis of Elementary Teaching INTRODUCTION It takes a special kind of person to be an elementary school teacher. The amount of hard work, patience, and expertise that goes into teaching young children is often underestimated and undervalued in American society. When one is thinking about becoming an educator, it is important to identify the reasons behind their desire to teach. Fully understanding both the enjoyable and challenging elements of the occupation can also make it clear whether or not it is the right career choice.
Many of their principles align with my teaching philosophy as well as my classroom management preferences. For example, on the very first day of school, my students and I will work together to develop a behavior contract that will contain the rules/norms of our classroom. We will brainstorm ideas together on an anchor chart, and then I will consolidate these responses into cohesive phrases. Once the “published” copy of the behavior contract has been presented to the students, and no changes need to be made, each student will sign the contract, indicating that they plan to abide by these rules every day, and if they make a poor choice, they accept the consequences that are to follow. The consequences for the broken rules/norms will also be discussed as a class.

A number of ways to establish a safe and supportive learning environment is to stay within what is deemed as conventional rules and disciplines. A typical class room layout is rows of desks and chairs facing the front, it is the usual expected layout for learners and encourages them to accept conformity, something as simple as sitting on the chairs facing the front of the classroom is reassuring to the majority that the class is safe. The teacher of the kindergarten class I help out with has very many different ways of classroom management. Before I start talking about how my teacher manages the classroom, I first want to talk about a substitute from another kindergarten class. She was a substitute for three days, but what I found interesting was she was able to get all the children to pay attention to her and behave properly. I’m sure the children were intimidated by her even I felt a little intimated myself. She was able to get even the most energetic child to control themselves.
