Without leadership, an organization cannot operate. A body that doesn’t have blood flow cannot function and leadership in an organization is the same. Leadership is how goals are accomplished and how change is influenced. An individual’s leadership philosophy can effect immense change. It’s imperative that a leader has a fluid, evolving approach while enabling growth. This is why the basic principles of my leadership philosophy are to take initiative, have character beyond reproach, and have a strong presence with integrity.
To truly lead you must be proactive. I lead from the front. If my Soldiers are in the dirt, I am too. The role of a Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) is to lead by example. An NCO should always strive to be right, and to most effectively accomplish mission. A leader must be able to look at a Soldier or an organization, and take the initiative to foster healthy change. A Soldier’s loyalty to his Sergeant is dependent on respect and trust. A Soldier will protect your life, he will follow you to death but you must prove to your Soldier that your character and dedication is beyond reproach. Character means always doing what is right for the Soldier, the mission, and the Army. Making the delineation between what is right and what is easy and to understand the dynamics of which loyalty takes priority is an NCO’s responsibility. Recently, I had a Soldier that wasn’t meeting standards. He could not maintain himself or his property, and timeliness was an issue. Since July he was unable to pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). He failed two consecutive record APFTs. I ensured his separation from the Army.
