The Marine Corps has thrived off of the success of its small unit leaders for 248 years. Marine Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) all have their own idea of what proper leadership looks like; however, leadership can always improve across the board. The outlying factor of leadership that Corporals and Sergeants lack the most is knowing themselves and seeking self improvement. Amongst countless ways NCOs could improve this sector of leadership lie four paramount methods with vast potential in fixing leadership at the root. These solutions include greater practice of humility, setting goals, more frequent self evaluations, and reflection on progression.

Keeping a record of progress will allow leaders the opportunity to look back on what they were thinking and previous results of individual evaluations. Along with positive impacts on goal setting, logging progress improves overall prosperity. Most, if not all leaders will never master all the traits but shifting their focus to one particular area will help bring the rest together. To get on the right track they must know themselves and seek self improvement. There are a variety of ways to master this principle which include meekness, planning goals, individual assessments, and logging advancements. The avenues of approach for improvement all band together starting with meekness. Humility within a boss allows an open, productive work circumstances for lower enlisted which in turn creates growth for that individual NCO. Along with humbleness, putting objectives in place with legitimate plans to follow through will make leaders advance in the area of focus. Moving along on the ways of individual growth, looking at themselves to find their lacking region of authority will implement a positive approach on building those areas. Once they are worked typically a type of maturation in the style of leadership will take place within the supervisor. Nothing will count if those advancements that are made are essentially forgotten about so keeping a record of all the progress that is made will help build on self enhancement.
