Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of speech sounds, or phonemes. I would incorporate the Phonemic Awareness strategy in a kindergarten through third grade classroom by using the phoneme segmentation method and the phoneme identity method. The phoneme segmentation method is when the students break a word into its separate sounds, saying each sound as they tap out or count it. Then they write and read the word. In general, vocabulary can be described as oral vocabulary or reading vocabulary. Oral vocabulary refers to words that we use in speaking or recognize in listening. Reading vocabulary refers to words we recognize or use in print. I would incorporate the Vocabulary strategy in a kindergarten through third grade classroom by getting the students to look up the meaning of a word in the dictionary and getting the students to understand the use of context clues and by getting the students. One of the easy ways for a student to learn what a word means is to look it up in a dictionary. When I was elementary school every classroom that I was in always had a classroom set of dictionaries and at least two computers. I know that times have changed and schools have more technology then they use to so a student could always pull out their tablet or iPad to look up the meaning of a word. When the students are reading a book or a piece from a textbook I could get them to pay attention to words that are around the word that they do not understand. For example, the students do not know what the word nutrition means. I could get the students to pay attention to the words surrounding commotion: food, healthy, and diet. These three words give the students a very strong clue as to what the word
