In the 4th edition of the strategies book, chapter 6 focuses on phonics and decoding assessments and strategies. I found it very interesting that there are several approaches when it comes to phonics instruction, which can be modified and or combined in reading programs. Since I was not taught phonics or decoding, I found this chapter very helpful and actually learned ways that will help my future teaching. The assessment I found to be the most interesting is the Early Names Test. This assessment was developed in 1990, later refined in 1994, and is a fast and easy way for teachers to use when gathering information about his/her students’ emerging decoding skills. This game is like the old game “Go Fish” and helps the students use their growing visual awareness of phonic sounds and patterns to construct the word families. This games can be played in small groups with two to four students or during the literacy groups with the teacher. The way this game is played is the students will have a deck of cards with words selected either from the students’ word banks or chosen by the teacher. Knowing what a student can and cannot do will make it easier what the teacher’s course of action should be when it comes to instruction. The Early Names Test assessment is a way that will help the teacher identify the important decoding skills the student knows. If a student is having trouble with this assessment, the teacher can prepare for further instruction for the student, which will support the instruction in phonics and decoding. The Phonics Fish Card Game is a great way for students to practice their awareness of phonic sounds and patterns to construct the word families. This strategy supports students in need of instruction because it is engaging for the student, which will make it easier for them to learn, and is a way to learn from other students. The game can also be played with the teacher, which is a great way for the teacher to see if the student’s phonics and decoding is growing or needs more
