Phonics Research Bibliography Phonics instruction is a very important aspect of early childhood education. Phonemic awareness and phonics are the foundation of an individual’s success in reading and comprehension. Without proficiency in phonics, a student can quickly fall behind and lack the skills needed to be successful as they continue through their education. With phonics having a large effect on a student’s overall success, it is crucial that effective phonics approaches are implemented in elementary classrooms across our country. The author begins by sharing a first-hand experience of a student with dyslexia falling behind in literacy by second grade, even while placed in a multi-tiered system of support. The author explores why a structured literacy approach would be beneficial for this student by stating the key features of SL. According to Spear-Swerling (2018), the key features include: explicit and systematic instruction, cumulative practice, ongoing review, student-teacher interaction, use of examples and nonexamples, decodable text, and effective feedback(pg.2). The knowledge of the different phases allows us to understand that phonics should be taught explicitly and systematically for true understanding. Partial alphabetic phase is important because it is a foundation for blending and decoding, the students begin to understand relations and differences between letters and sounds. The article then describes many ways that phonemic awareness and knowledge of the alphabetic principle are crucial for students learning to blend and decode in phonics. This article shares that phonemic awareness and phonics are complimentary and phonemic awareness sets the foundation for successful phonics instruction.
