Disability is the consequence of an impairment that may be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory emotional, developmental, or some combination of these. A disability may be present from birth or occur during a person’s lifetime.
Disability is a broad term that covers impairments activity limitations and participation restrictions. Impairment is problem in a body function or structure an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered in an individual in executing a task or action while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. Physical disabilities and impairments interfere with a child’s ability to attain the same developmental milestones as his/her age mates. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a person with an orthopedic impairment who needs special education and related services is considered to have physical disability. Disability refers to significant learning problems in academic area. In simpler terms results from a difference in the way a person’s brain is wired. They have difficulty reading, writing, and spelling, reasoning, recalling and organizing. It describes a group of disorders characterized by inadequate development of specific academic language speech skill area.
Neurological differences in processing information that severely limit a person’s ability to learn in specific areas.
Main types of Learning disability:
Learning disabilities in reading (dyslexia) reading problems difficulty understanding relationship between sounds, letters and words. Inability to grasp meanings, words, phrases.
Learning disabilities in Math (dyscalculia)here child may struggle with memorization and organization of numbers, operation signs, numbers and facts. Trouble with counting principles or difficulty telling time.
Learning disability in writing (Dysgraphia)Basic writing disorder refers to physical difficulty forming words and letters. Inability to comprehend and synthesize information.
Other types of learning disability are dyspraxia learning disability in motor skills. Dysphasia disability in language.
