Being a student in a graduate program is a difficult task, be that as it may, to maintain and develop professionalism in a Physical Therapy program takes on a life of its own. Physical Therapy in itself has grown exponentially over the past few years and will continue through 2020. As growth continues, professionalism will guide the profession and define a good therapist from an exceptional therapist. As first lady Michelle Obama stated in her Democratic National Convention speech, “When they go low, we go high.” (Benen, 2016) In other words, can the person or student in this case, be accountable, show excellence, and maintain integrity even when negativity or adversity present themselves. Accountability is a characteristic of professionalism. Defined by me as the ability to accept my position, tasks, and actions as what they are and own them. There are two subcategories of integrity, values and morals. Values are things, ideas, and thoughts that you have determined as right or wrong through experience. Morals are those things, ideas, and thoughts that define what individuals understand as right or wrong as a standard through knowledge. Ethics combines your values and your morals to develop a displayed behavior of the two. An ethical student would not contemplate of intentionally passing on another person’s work as their own, for that reason, they would internalize the act as being morally wrong. Although, ethics is the behavior of integrity it is always altering and evolving. Decision making becomes a two-step process when you have integrity. First, looking at each option as if it is wrong or right. Secondly, taking the right options and choosing the best. Integrity can be the making or breaking of a student.
