Text messaging, social media, the internet, and other modern technologies have made communicating much easier than ever before. They have become an essential part of our society for over a decade now and it can be difficult to envisage a world without their presence. Although these technologies are a convenient way to communicate, they have ironically been inimical to our social interactions in reality. An increased role for technology will cause people to neglect the underappreciated world and the people surrounding them even more than they do now.

Instead of spending hours throughout the day wasting valuable, finite time glued to a cellular device, people should alternatively begin living in the present moment. Author Steven Picker attests to this theory in his article “Mind Over Mass Media”. Picker urges readers to develop “strategies of self control” to alleviate the “distracting or addictive” tendencies of technology and moderate the use of social media (Picker 1031). This innovation has indubitably made communication, education, and the access of information substantially easier than ever before. The idea of being forced to impatiently wait days, or in extreme cases, weeks, to receive a response from those we wish to get in contact with is extinct. We are privileged to have the convenience of communicative technology, however it has indeed become an addiction to many. Preoccupied with social media and innovative modes to communicate, people cease to relish their present moment and even neglect the friends and family in their vicinity.
