One of the organizations I am proud to donate to is the United Service Organizations, or USO. Since 1941, the USO has supported troops at home and abroad. With the intent to lift the spirits of troops and their family members, the organization endeavors to provide a “home away from home” feeling for all the families dealing with the rigors of serving overseas. The organization became famous for its Camp Shows over the years--with some occurring in active war zones. To make this all possible, the USO relies heavily on private donations.

Regularly, I work as a volunteer at American Cancer Society. I aspire to assist the one who are on the edge of life. The fight against cancer is tough, and the patients need all the supports that they can get. The volunteer opportunity helps me realize that I’m not the center of the universe, but we are the universe. The best feeling when a person does such thing is the smile on cancer patients’ faces.
Of my many volunteer and paid extra-curricular activities, the most important to me is the National Art Honor Society, which extends artistic activities to my community. We organize two school events: the Festival of Trees and the Talent Competition. The Festival of Trees is an event when every school club can choose to donate and decorate a tree that we set up. All of the money raised goes to an organization of our choice. For the last 4 years, we have donated to Street Grace, which benefits the fight against human trafficking, especially in the Metro Atlanta area.
There are many things I learned in my interview with Rosemary Plorin. I learned what skills are invaluable in the public relations field. What seemed to be most impressive about Plorin is growth from her humble beginnings. She did not go to college bright-eyed and ready to become the healthcare PR powerhouse she is today. She underwent a gradual change that required introspective reflection.
I learned about Occidental from my family, my cousin Brian Smith is the offensive coordinator for Oxy's football team and his wife Liane Smith works for Oxy as well. When I visited Oxy I was able to experience the school for what it really is, an amazing community. Everyone I talked to, students and staff, were very friendly and made me feel right at home. I was able to attend the homecoming barbecue and football game and it really left me with a great feeling about the school. My main interest in Occidental is that it is a liberal arts school.
My Values of becoming a part of the NJHS I am Lauren Forsyth and a student of Catonsville Middle School. I feel that I should be a part of National Junior Honor Society because of my dedication towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. The following essay will demonstrate how I have dedicated my time towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. As of 2016, I have dedicated myself to 47 hours of service learning and giving back to my community is a very important part of my life. In 6th grade I created a fundraiser to help breast cancer awareness to help find a cure for breast cancer and I had earned 5 service learning hours with two hundred dollars raised in total at my school.
I am an active member in our community. I volunteer every month, at least once a month. One of the organizations that I volunteer at is Spoonful of Hope. This organization dedicated to feeding those who were, and still are feeling the effects of hurricane Sandy. They also give food to those who are hungry and in need of a decent meal in our community.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think there was anything impactful I could do to help at a young age. Until I found a committee organizing a mini-THON to help support, and raise money for the Four Diamonds Foundation that assist children and families that are impacted by cancer. I provide for my familial community by being a major financial contributor in my family. Also, my country, Dominican Republic is severely poor. Recently I got the chance to go to Dominican Republic and my family and myself round up many toys, snacks, and books to give to children. We cook a large meal and go to one of the poorest parts of the country: Hospedaje Yaque, Santiago de los Caballeros. In this annual event we give poor children and families a meal, many toys, books, and things that they need for survival.
Out of the many organizations that I have had the privilege to volunteer at, Relay for Life and the American Cancer society are hands down my most influential. Through my time volunteering here, I have witnessed an abundance of individuals strive towards the common goal of preventing the suffering of others, and I have seen the fruits of their labor come into fruition with cancer survivors receiving the treatment that they so desire and hundreds of thousands of dollars being generated from just one season of effort put toward the advancement of cancer research. Having just watched the brilliant film about a gifted boy called Vitus made me rethink of the notion of giftedness. Whereas Vitus exhibits typical pattern of behavior of a gifted child, he is still unique in his ability to live “like a gifted”. In the beginning of the film he is regarded as aloof and extraordinary, discussing the concept of a “global warming”, thus, making his kindergarten teacher feel befuddled and even frightened. Though this precocity is seen a typical trait of a gifted child, according to Robinson (2008), who puts the intellectual superiority over other age peers in first place along with other eminent features (p. 34). After that we see the situation recurring during the math lesson, when Vitus operates with complex figures
I’ve never been very interested in fashion and I’m not a fan of constantly updating my wardrobe. Seeing the major effects that the fashion industry has makes me feel better about falling behind in the fashion world. I watched China Blue, a documentary about the poor working conditions in Chinese factories that produced denim products, for my International Management course as an undergraduate student. That documentary impacted me, and I often think of the people that were highlighted in that film. I feel as if The True Cost will be a documentary that I think of from time to time as well.
Everyone belongs to a social class. Whatever reality you been born in, is going to shape the way you believe and act. Each individual is different and unique, however, is not unknown that the experiences we had over our life shape our identity. In the movie Elysium, the Earth has been contaminated. The rich people flew away to a new land created in the space named Elysium, which left those with less money behind.
