According to the American Nurses Association, nursing means that the nurse is responsible for a plethora of tasks. These tasks include protection of patients from internal and external factors, promoting health, encouraging independence, maintaining safety, managing pain, and being an advocate. The definition provided by the ANA encompasses all aspects of the patient as a whole, as well as outside factors.
