Country Report Pizza is a popular dish all around the world. You might think that it was created some time in the 1900s by Americans but that isn’t all true. Pizza was actually created in Naples, Italy in the 1860s. Shortly after the pizza was created, a favorites dish, the calzone was created. Italy is a big mass of land in the southern part of Europe that is shaped like a giant boot. The Mediterranean Sea,Tyrrhenian Sea and Ligurian Sea border Italy to the West, the Adriatic Sea borders the East and the Ionian Sea to the South. Southern Italy is warmer than Northern Italy making it easier to grow vegetables and chilies. Central and Southern Italy are a lot warmer than Northern Italy which is why there are more oily and tomato based foods while Northern Italy used colder foods and use butter as an oil instead of olive oil, having a harder time growing olive trees.

There are over one million Muslims in Italy, 700,000 Eastern Orthodox Christians, 550,000 Protestants, 235,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses, 45,000 Jewish people. Religious Christain foods consist of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter. During Lent, Christians are forbidden to eat meat on Fridays. After Lent, Christians usually eat lamb to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. During Christmas Eve, Christians eat seafood, commonly the dish Cioppino.
Breakfast in Italy usually started at 7:00 a.m and ends at 11:00 a.m. Breakfast consists of a light meal, usually croissant and a coffee (most Italians do not drink coffee after 11:00 a.m). Lunch in Italy starts and ends in different regions of the country. In the North lunch starts at 12:30 p.m and ends at 2:00 p.m. In the South lunch starts at 1:30 p.m and ends 2:30 p.m. Lunch consists of both a first and second course. There is usually a snack time for children before dinner around 4:00 p.m. Dinner starts 8:00 p.m and ends around 10:00
