2 May 2018 The Issue of Plagiarism Plagiarism is an issue that has risen to a high concern, especially in the university realm. Plagiarism has spread through resources such as the internet, articles, books, and much more. To be someone who practices taking information that is not theirs and using it in any form without giving full credit can be guilty of plagiarism. It is not something easy to understand and use, hence why so many students and people get caught up in it. The only reason why plagiarism is considered a major problem in universities is because of the amount of students who act upon it. From past experience in writing essays for english, my teacher made us write a citation page, and hand in a copy of everything we used. In the copy of works we handed in, we had to make sure to highlight all the quotes and information we used in our essay. Anything that did not match with what we highlighted would be considered plagiarism. If Long Island University does this, they will decrease the plagiarism percentage. Another way Long Island University can bring down plagiarism usage is if they make sure students only use books from their library, the course books, and any books online. The use of this method constraints students to only use books. If the university makes sure to stray students away from any websites or answers to prompts, then students will be forced to use their own and correct citations giving full credit. The only way plagiarism would happen through this is if the student does not end up citing the information at all or correctly. According to Lisa W. Foderaro, “On Course Hero, for example, students can type in the college name and course number to unearth examples of research papers on, say, World War…”. (Psst! Need the Answer…) In this quote, Foderaro is trying to explain that if students are allowed to use the internet they can plagiarise by taking other people's work without giving credit to them. Another example as to why Long Island must constrain the students is because many students use the internet to download essays that they do not own. Mary Clarke-Pearson states in her article that, “Downloading papers from the Internet, combined with the upsurge of other incidents of cheating, has been a growing concern for the future of academic integrity of higher education”.
