In this article, author Jodi Wilogren discusses how plagiarism at a school affected an entire community. In December of 2002, a teacher at Piper High School found a shocking statistic: 28 out of 118 sophomores have plagiarized on their biology project, which involved collecting leaves and researching them. A website called turnitin.com detected that one in four papers included sections copied off the internet. The teacher, Mrs. Pelton, gave the students zeroes on their project and forced them to meet with the school board to discuss their behavior. Mrs. Pelton had previously set rules and expectations for the class which stated that plagiarism would result in failure of the assignment and a note to the parents. The school experienced backlash
