As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
In Loye Youngs's essay, “Is Humiliation an Ethically Appropriate Response to Plagiarism?” Loye Young claims that the action he took against students who plagiarized is valid. He justifies his claim by listing his moral beliefs and using an example of Senator Joseph Biden plagiarism story. Six students were caught for a common act, they all submitted a plagiarized paper. Loye Young states that even after a well-reviewed and clear syllabus he is "surprised by how common and blatant plagiarism turned out to be" (Young, 191).
Malcolm Gladwell’s “Something Borrowed” is an article in which Gladwell discusses the matter of plagiarism and how it has drastically changed from being considered bad writing manners to a punishable crime. The consensus on plagiarism is that it is never acceptable to copy someone else’s work and that all copying should be punishable. In his article, Gladwell writes about his experience of being plagiarized to bring light to problems with punishing all copying without considering intent. Plagiarism in today's world can cause someone their career, a single charge of plagiarism can potentially ruin a person's life. In the last thirty years, laws pertaining to intellectual properties have strengthened, redefining plagiarism as a whole.
It's two o'clock in the morning, and a student sits in a dark, quiet bedroom, his face illuminated only by the glow of his laptop. The silence is punctuated by the rhythmic tapping of keys as he struggles through composing the fifth page of the twenty that are required for his research paper due tomorrow morning, only a few short hours away. The student begins the slow, grueling process of paraphrasing and citing his source, when suddenly, a sense of overwhelming fatigue falls over him. Giving up, he copies and pastes the information into his own document, scrambling it a bit before printing it out and shoving it in his binder. A situation like the one this student encountered is not uncommon, but the choice to plagiarize has innumerable consequences
Plagiarism As a student of Walden University, I am expected and held accountable for the integrity of any work that I write and submit. Walden University’s code of conduct on academic integrity states, “A student who enrolls at the university thereby agrees to respect and acknowledge the research and ideas of others in his or her work and to abide by those regulations governing work stipulated by the academic unit or academic program, and, in turn, the instructor” (Walden University, 2014). The first violation of academic integrity is plagiarism. According to Walden University (2014), “plagiarism is defined as use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source.”

Plagiarism is a serious crime in some places, something that should not be done but can not be avoided to some people. In “Plagiarism Lines Blur For Students In Digital Age” written by Trip Gabriel, he talks about how college students thought it was okay to plagiarise. Gabriel first introduces how easy it is for students to plagiarize, how anything can be yours on the internet, and how original sources are not even original anymore. Things on the internet can be yours as easy as a few clicks from the internet says, Gabriel. “Digital technology makes copying and pasting easy,” said Gabriel.
I, Archie Arias, suggest that the school implement a set of guidelines that help students adhere to national copyright laws. A set of copyright rules are important because they will help keep students safe and allow them to become better people in the future. The rules will also help protect and encourage originality. The rules that I suggest are the following, 1.) Plagiarism or things that violate copyright policies should be removed.
In Plagiarisms, Authorships, and the Academic Death Penalty, Rebecca Howard used words like “robbed” and “kidnapped” to describe plagiarism. However, most emphasis had been put on the fact that originality is key to recognition and true authorship where she says “writers who want recognition must assert priority; to assert priority is to assert originality; and to assert originality engenders a fear of being robbed” (Howard 791). In UNCW’s policy, plagiarism is defined as “the copying of language, phrasing, structure, or specific ideas of another and presenting any of these as one’s own work, including information found on the Internet” (“Section I” 12). This definition is very different from Rebecca’s policy because it has included sources from the internet. Rebecca shows us that this issue of plagiarism only started recently because of technological advancements which brought about the big debate about authorship (Howard).
Reflection 50 Myths& Lies To begin, the book 50 Myths& Lies that Threaten America’s Public Schools covered a variety of topics such as why teachers are quickly blamed publicly along with their unions, how to make our schools better, equality of schools, money, and how schools make students college and career ready. With each of these topics were smaller sub-topics such as the importance of money, bullying, teachers’ abilities, and the various choices of schooling. With each topic/sub-topic the authors guided us through each subject uncovering myths and lies that surround them.
Although the school goes viral, no adult takes action to attempt to clear their school name and reputation. This gives an example to the students that their racist antics are acceptable, even though they tarnish their schools name and how they carry themselves. Plagiarism I first learned about plagiarism in my sixth grade class. The only reason this topic was covered is because a few of my classmates and I plagiarized our research papers. When we had a research paper assigned and I taught I would just do it the easy was so I just copy and pasted an article from Wikipedia and turned it in as my own work, I didn’t even change words or phrases around. I knew what I was doing is wrong
People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences.
One of the most crucial traits a scholar can develop is a high level of self-efficacy which is essential to academic success. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37). This very pervasive problem plagues the education system, and many researchers and psychologist seek to explain the driving force behind students’ academic dishonesty.
