It seemed to be off topic. The foreshadowing that Buddy does with his dreaming is intense and very visualizing. The line that says, “When the arm came down, Buddy screamed because it had a blue cuff and sharp silver button.” I think that the silver button was symbolizing the sheriff’s button. Erdrich writes “then traveling, traveling very fast and in the wrong direction for when he looked up he saw three of them were advancing to meet the great metal thing with hooks and barbs and all sorts of sharp equipment to catch their bodies and draw their blood.” I now notice that he was dreaming about driving down the road away from his mother. He believes he’s going the wrong away because he is not going the way towards his mother. The “three of them” are officer Harmony, the social worker, and officer Brackett.
