In Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, Romeo tells the Apothecary, ¨There is thy gold, worse poison to men's souls, / Doing more murders in this loathsome world, / Than these poor compounds that thou mayst not sell. / I sell thee poison; thou hast sold me none.” (Shakespeare 5.1.84-88) This quotation explains money has killed more people than poison. Romeo and Juliet´s sudden realization about each other´s social status, Capulet´s power to force Juliet to marry Paris, and exchanging gold for poison threatens the lives of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet´s sudden realization that they are enemies in love because of their households. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. Juliet knows she must listen to her father because he has the last word. This shows how much power Capulet really has to disown or even consider killing his daughter because she is reluctant to accept his demand, knowing of the circumstances. Knowing her father is not bluffing, Juliet gets on her knees, ¨Good Father, I beseech you on my knees, / Hear me with patience but to speak a word.¨ (3.5.164-165) She only yields to her father´s demand because she knows that she can not marry Paris while being married to Romeo. Because of her father´s rigid demand for her to marry Paris, Juliet goes as far to make a plan to fake her death in order to reunite with Romeo. However, her plan led Romeo to believe her fake death is real, having no prior knowledge, and ultimately, he commits suicide by drinking
