In the essay, “Escape from Western Diet”, the author, Michael Pollan discusses that western diet is unhealthy to people, because western diet is responsible for many kinds of diseases. Michael pollan is against with the new theories and he think that the reason behind this diseases is because of the food industry. Nowadays food industry is making more processed food than the healthy food. I agree with Michael Pollan that food industries is using different type of theories to make a new products which is very harmful and unhealthy to those people who regularly eats diet food. I also agree with Michael Pollan’s three rules “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants”.
In recent decade, the United States has seen supermarkets continuously get filled with packages labeled with things like “Low sodium” or “No Trans Fats.” Companies stick these labels on their food to match the current fads of what is good for you and what is not. In his essay Unhappy Meals, Michael Pollan advocates a return to natural and basic foods, and deplores nutritionism. Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.
Relevance between Food and Humans with Rhetorical Analysis In the modern industrial society, being aware of what the food we eat come from is an essential step of preventing the “national eating disorder”. In Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma, he identifies the humans as omnivores who eat almost everything, which has been developed into a dominant part of mainstream unhealthiness, gradually causing the severe eating disorder consequences among people. Pollan offers his opinion that throughout the process of the natural history of foods, deciding “what should we have for dinner” can stir the anxiety for people based on considering foods’ quality, taste, price, nutrition, and so on.
In turn, he provides his own rules for escaping the western diet as well as the idea of nutritionist set forth by scientists. Then Pollan explains that scientific theories of nutritionist focus on individual nutrients rather than foods as a whole. He further goes on to refute this claim mentioning that these scientific theories contradict with one another. Pollan explains “the scientists who blame our health problems on deficiencies of [micronutrients] are not the same scientists who see a sugar soaked diet leading to metabolic syndrome and from there to diabetes, heart disease…” (Pollan, 421).
Today’s society is surfaced with various problems, one of them being our diet along with obesity. The health of our country’s people has become a national problem. One’s diet is based upon their choices, but even then there are many controversial views upon what is healthy and what is not. Two essays that I read uniquely present their views on this topic. First, there is “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by Mary Maxfield and then there is “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko.
Eating Healthy Michael Pollan, a health food spokesperson, made some interesting critiques on how he believes that there is an American paradox such as, “a notably unhealthy population preoccupied with… the idea of eating healthy” (Maxfield, 442). The idea taken from Michael Pollan’s quote is that he believes the definition of healthy eating has more to do with how it is “driven by a well-funded corporate machine” (Maxfield, 442). He is also claiming that the food industry is benefiting on our lack of knowledge on how to eat properly when it comes to being healthy. In her article Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating, Mary Maxfield directly attacked Pollan’s claims, pointing out the hypocrisy in his words because he is sharing
Author of the essay “Eat Food: Food Defined” Michael Pollan, states that everything that pretends to be a food really isn’t a food. Michael persuaded me into agreeing with his argument by talking about how people shouldn’t eat anything their great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food and avoid food products containing ingredients that are unpronounceable, lists more than five, and contains high fructose corn syrup. He opened my eyes to information I wouldn’t have thought about or researched myself. He got into depth about a type of Sara Lee bread that contains way more ingredients than needed to make the bread, including high fructose corn syrup that isn’t good for you. Marketers are doing this to sell more of their product by making it taste
Just reading the title of In Defense of Food (2008) by Michael Pollan gave me some hope that he would tell us that enjoying our food without guilt is all we need to know. In a sense he does just that, but first he defines what food is and is not and then goes on to explain how to find, and enjoy, this food. My first question is why people feel the need for someone to tell them what to eat. In fact, Pollan himself asks this question. Throughout the book, he spends a great deal of time defending why he wrote the book.
He was curious to find out what’s the right food to eat, how to keep a healthy diet and food habit, and how to distinguish between harmful and hearty foods. Pollan was fascinated with the science of nutrition, so he decided to go ahead and do a research on nutrition. What kept Pollan motivated in this subject is the fact that it all became simpler as he investigated further about nutrition. On page x of the introduction, Pollan states, “Feeling as confused as everyone else, I set out to get to the bottom of a simple question: What should I eat? What do we really know about the links between our diet and our health?
Learning how to eat well and fining resources to encourage healthy habits will lead to a more fulfilled life. The food pyramid, for many years, was the map Americans should follow to eat well. The food pyramid was never a favorite of nutritionists from its inception. Nutritionist’s criticism of the iconic image was that it did not clearly distinguish healthy food from unhealthy in the major food groups represented in the pyramid (Newman, 2011). The food pyramid is recognized easily by children and adults but does little to educate Americans on making healthy eating choices.
I combined how your nutrition is important because it can prevent you from getting sick or becoming overweight and suffering. Lack of nutrition education, marketing persuading consumers to want harmful food, and the healthcare system not being effective all have to deal with why healthy nutrition is not being focused on or accomplished. This topic is important and interesting if you are interested in global healthcare or local healthcare. Each one of the problems can be solved or reduced to focus on the human nutrition or to decrease the rate of deaths due to obesity, heart failures, etc. The research and the 7-step plan, promoting healthier food options, and reduction of pills and helping patients learn about nutrition are all ways to improve the lack of
There is no doubt in everyone 's mind that diet plays a major role in people 's fitness and health. In general, eating the right amount and kinds of food brings us good health, while failing to stick to a balanced diet results to health problems. For instance, due to the world 's fast-paced changes, people are getting used to eating fast food items, which often results to obesity problems, cardiovascular diseases, and other ailments. On the contrary, many girls give in to the pressures of the entertainment and fashion industry by starving themselves just to be thin. Again, this leads to eating disorders and dangerous conditions.
B. Relevance: Having a well balanced diet can help us reduce risks of heart disease, diabetes and chronic diseases. C. Credibility statement: I myself enjoy having a well balanced diet. Researchers: Kyle Antonio Latayan & Margaret Manuel General Topic: Nutrition Narrowed Topic: Effects of malnutrition on children ages 6-10 in NCR in 2013 Thesis Statement: There are several effects of malnutrition among children living in the poverty line because they do not receive adequate education. Literature Review Nutrition is one of the essential processes directly influencing the overall health and growth of an individual. This requires a person to be fully aware on the types and quantity of food he or she needs to intake on a regular basis. However, the nutrition education of most people are adversely affected, as poverty continues to be one of the central problems encompassing the whole world, especially the third world countries.
One of the most important ways to stay healthy is to have healthy food and eat them in an appropriate time. Healthy eating is the cornerstone in preventing the health from many conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and blood pressure. Junk foods should be avoided as they do not have any nutrients, so no point in eating them. Instead of having these fast and unhealthy foods, the diet should contain leafy vegetables, fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, and fish as these are plenty in nutrients.
