Nearly everyday in everyone’s lives, they see banners, magazines, newspapers, and along with posters telling them to be environmental friendly and to stop pollution. But do people listen to the advices? Do people realize that pollution is one of the biggest global killers? Pollution is the number one cause of death in the developing world; it kills approximately 10 million people every year. It’s hard to tell when and where pollution began. When a volcano erupts, it sends toxic gas into our atmosphere, causing air pollution, meaning that pollution has always existed on Earth. Based on the book Journey to Jo’burg, Naledi and Tiro, who lived in a poor conditioned village in Africa, were determined to go find their mother who works 300 km away in Johannesburg. They needed to go find their mother because of their poor baby sister, Dineo, who suddenly became very sick. According to the book, there were unfortunately many young children who died because they lacked nutrition. But, the children also got sick because of the dirty and unclean village they lived in (Naidoo, Journey to Jo'burg, 1985). Pollution is such a big threat that it causes an unbelievable amount of diseases. These include cancer, brain damages, asthma attacks, eye irritation, lung disease, and malfunction to some organs in the human body system. Not all of the mentioned diseases cause death. It can also influence the person’s appearance and cause irreversible damages. In fact, pollution causes three times more deaths than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. Pollution doesn’t only cause horrendous disease to all living beings, but it also causes disastrous impacts to Earth’s environment. Approximately, 7 billion kilograms of garbage are thrown into the ocean every year. Sadly, most of the garbage thrown overseas is plastic. Plastic takes a humongous amount of time to decompose. When dumped into oceans, animals such as turtles will most likely eat it, causing them to get sick and die. There is also garbage all over Earth’s land. Careless people around the globe sometimes don’t care about throwing trash in the trash bin and just dump it on the street. These careless acts cause our environment to become fetid and dirty. But that’s not all, when people burn trash; it releases toxic air into our atmosphere causing global warming and various illnesses.
