In the outsiders by S.E. Hinton Ponyboy is a greaser Ponyboy is a greaser. The greasers and the Socs constantly fight against each other. The main character Ponyboy is a major outsider, who does not feel apart of a larger group the Greaser gang. Ponyboy and the greasers fight against the Socs in Tulsa Oklahoma. Ponyboy is an outsider because he doesn’t believe in fighting. During the course of the novel, Ponyboy becomes enlightened on how he views the world.
In the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy has a dark view of his oldest brother Darry. He feels Darry doesn’t care for him the same way as Soda does(Soda is Ponyboys other older brother). Prior to this quote Cherry Valence, a character in the book was asking Ponyboy about his family. Ponyboy said,”He is as hard as a rock and about as a human(chapter 5). This shows that in the beginning of the novel ponyboys view on Darry was negative, as he described Darry as a rock.

He has a better relationship with Darry but he still fights with him sometimes. During this quote, Ponyboy and Johnny are talking to each other.
Johnny looked at me quickly. 'I didn't mean nothing ... You don't act like either one [of your brothers].' 'I know,' I said. 'Well,' I said, thinking this over, 'you ain't like any of the gang. I mean, I couldn't tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff. I couldn't even remember that poem around them. I mean, they just don't dig. Just you and Sodapop.
