The United States is known as a melting pot; this is basically a metaphor meaning the U.S. has a society in which there are a plethora of different people blended together in one country. According to the Migration Policy Institute, “The U.S. immigrant population stood at more than 42.4 million, or 13.3 percent, of the total U.S. population of 318.9 million in 2014, according to ACS data” (2016). These legal and illegal immigrants have a tremendous effect on our country; more specifically our economy and labor supply. Immigration has been studied, and it is known that a significant amount of immigrants that come to the United States have very little skill and will accept low wages, having both positive and negative effects on the natives of America. Skilled migrants increase productivity which leads to a rise in wages. In addition, these skilled migrants have the power to expand our labor supply and demand for labor. According to the Migration Observatory, “Migrants expand consumer demand for goods and services. In the medium to long run, immigration can be expected to lead to more investment. Both effects result in greater demand for labour and thus increased wages and employment in the economy” (2015). Many people believe that immigrant is not good and that these migrants steal the native’s jobs, but immigration can increase job competition as well as create new jobs, it all just depends on the economy at a given time.
